Filmstank Fun Facts: Ridley Scott’s Brother- By Dave

Perhaps one of the most well known and talented directors on the past few decades is Ridley Scott. Known for his incredible filmography including Blade Runner (1982), Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), American Gangster (2007)- and that’s barely getting started! He is also well known for creating a 1984 Apple Mac commercial.

However he is not the only Scott.. He has a brother. His name is Tony. Tony Scott.

It’s strange that, whilst not technically living in the shadow of his older brother, he does not seem to have gained the same amount of celebration.

His filmography has been somewhat up-and-down but there are some real blockbusters amongst the titles to his name. Some of these include: Top Gun (1986), Days of Thunder (1990), Enemy of the State (1998) and Man on Fire (2004).

After graduating from college studying fine arts and fighting a strong desire to become a painter, he was soon sidetracked by his brother’s film production interest. His initial interest was documentaries, but he was soon persuaded by his brother:

“”Tony had wanted to do documentaries at first. I told him, ‘Don’t go to the BBC, come to me first.’ I knew that he had a fondness for cars, so I told him ‘Come work with me and within a year you’ll have a Ferrari. And he did” – Ridley Scott…
