Filmstank Fun Facts: Robert Stack’s Voice – By Dave

Robert Stack may not be a familiar name to you- at least not in the same way as other ‘big’ Hollywood actors. His uniqueness was largely derived from his deep, mellow voice. You may remember him from such programs as Unsolved Mysteries. You can refresh you memory here.

Stack’s vocal talent created an almost tangible sense of intrigue and fear, yet wielded a sensual, sinister tone. He was the Sean Connery of the United States, minus the 007 role. Stack won critical acclaim in films such as The Mortal Storm (1940) and Written on the Wind (1956)- from which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.

But that voice… so smooth, effortless and succumbing. In his later years, Stack suffered from prostate cancer and eventaully died of a heart attack in 2003. He also hosted and produced a documentary series called Lord of the Mafia in the 1990’s. There is no better voice for such subject matter. What a voice!
